O'Grady was born to Jim O'Grady and Jan O'Grady. Jim O'Grady works as financial advisor. She grew up in Wheaton and attended Wheaton North School. She graduated in 1981. She appeared in some commercials before moving from Wheaton, Illinois, to Los Angeles. The first time she worked, O'Grady was a Montgomery Ward model, where she also appeared in a variety of commercials. She was a part of the 1988 romantic comedy, She's Having a Baby and was then cast as a frequent part in ABC Drama China Beach, opposite Dana Delany.
